Busy, BUSY day today… Make sure you do all of the items below!

If you have not already done so, please make sure you highlight all of the key terms in your notes on nbk. p. 21 about the Fall of Rome.  Just highlight the key term one time so that Mrs. Claassen can easily find the notes on the topic.  Key terms:  1) weak rulers, 2) mercenary army, 3) size of empire, 4) economic problems, 5) Diocletian, 6) Constantine, 7) Romulus Augustulus

If you have not already done so, please make sure you make a title page on nbk. p. 29.  Write the following information:

                                                                                Chapter 2

The Development of Feudalism in Western Europe

On nbk. p. 25, write the following title:  What I now know about ancient Rome…

Then, spend at least 10 minutes writing down anything you know about Rome.  You should not look back into your notebook to do this.  You should do it from memory as much as possible.  This is a review write, so I want you to focus on information.  You do not need to worry about capitalization, punctuation or spelling.  Don’t worry if they are full sentences, although you should not have any single words listed without information.  Don’t worry what order of topics you write about.  It does not matter what is first or last.  Just write!  Show me what you know!

On nbk. p. 30, write the following title:  What do I already know about the Middle Ages?

Then write in complete sentences what you already know about the Middle Ages.  It is okay if you do not know much yet.  We will learn!

                Sentence starters:             1) I know that…

                                                                2) I think I know that…

                                                                3) I am guessing that…

                Topic: Early Christianity

Essential Questions: How did the religion of Christianity start?

                                                      How did Christianity change Rome?

We reviewed these notes on Christianity today.  Please make sure you do the following things to your notes:

  1. Chunk your notes.  That means that you should draw lines through your notes to separate the five categories.
  2. Make sure the five categories are labeled.  Highlight the labels of the categories.  The five categories should be: 1) Birth of Jesus, 2) Life and teachings of Jesus, 3) death and resurrection of Jesus, 4) Spread of Christianity (Saul/Paul), and 5) persecution of Christians.
  3. If you were absent for any part of these lectures on Christianity, please write me a note about which days you missed at the top of your notes by the topic and essential questions.  You are still required to have notes on each of the five categories, but your note will remind me that your notes may not have as much information as those students who were present in class the lecture days.  I want to grade you fairly.

Tonight’s assignment:

On the wkst., write about at least ONE way that Christianity changed Rome.  When you describe the change, make sure you describe how Rome was originally, and then ALSO explain HOW Christianity brought about the change in Rome.  Be clear. All classes FINISHED our next section of notes about Roman Daily Life.  If you missed part of the lecture, make sure you pick-up a copy of packet #3 entitled “Daily Life Among the Romans” to help you gain the information you missed.  Key terms/topics covered so far include 1) life of the poor, 2) life of the rich, 3) slavery and 4) family life.

Set-up your notes for the next section on nbk. p. 15.  Write the following information:

                                Topic: Roman Daily Life

Essential Question: What was daily life like for the poor and wealthy of ancient Rome?

Tonight’s assignment is to complete the worksheet in which you will write a paragraph contrasting two examples of how the poor and wealthy of Rome lived different lives.  This paragraph is due tomorrow.

  • Make sure you write about both points of view.  Do not write sentences like, “The poor lived in wood apartments, but the rich did not.”  That sentence does not tell us anything about how the homes of the wealthy were constructed.  It only tells one point of view.
  • Make sure you write about at least two topics.  Some suggestions include: housing, food, cooking, waste disposal, or jobs.
  • Think about your word choices as you write.  While it is okay to use the contrast word “but” in your sentence, it is not very interesting to read.  (example: The poor ___ but, the wealthy ____.)  It is much more interesting to use a different contrast word such as: however, dissimilar, on the other hand, on the contrary etc…  (example: The poor ____.  On the other hand, the wealthy _____.)
