Today was an early release for Thanksgiving break.  Classes were very short today.

Today students worked on a personal coat of arms.  This assignment is worth points and will be graded!  It is not due on Monday. (No homework over Thanksgiving break!)  However, the coat of arms wkst. will be due shortly after break.  Whatever was not finished in class today becomes homework.  There will not be another time during class to work on it.

                Required:

                1)Read the information on the back of the wkst.

                2) Create your coat of arms.  Take some time and effort and do a neat job. 

                3) Your coat of arms should include at least one color that represents you.  Describe that color AND WHY you used it on your coat of arms in a sentence at the bottom of the worksheet.

                4) Your coat of arms should have at least one symbol that represents you.  Feel free to use an example from the worksheet, or create your own. (Soccer ball?  Book? Music Note?)  Describe the symbol AND WHY you used it on your coat of arms in a sentence at the bottom of the worksheet.

                5) Your coat of arms should have a mark of cadency to show your birth order in your family.  Describe the mark of cadency AND WHY you used it on your coat of arms in a sentence at the bottom of the worksheet.

                6) Choose at least one more (or more!) color or symbol to use on your coat of arms that represents you.  Describe the color or symbol you chose AND WHY you used it on your coat of arms as the 4th sentence at the bottom of the worksheet.

                7) Watch your spelling, capitalization and punctuation in your sentences.

Your entry task was to finish working on your Cornell notes from chapter 2.  You are to go back to previous notes and work on chunks, titles and questions.  Remember, these repetitions will help you prepare for the chapter 2 test tomorrow!  Check to make sure you have done these 3 repetitions to 2.2 (page 35), 2.3 (page 39), 2.4 (page 43), 2.5 (page 49) and 2.6 (page 51).  You must have chunked, titled and questioned your notes for each section in preparation for a later notebook check.

We started and finished our 2.7 notes about Peasants.  We did not use Cornell notes for this section.  On nbk. p. 53, set-up your notes.  Divide the page into 5 sections, and write the following titles… Peasant Work, Peasant Taxes (money), Peasant Homes, Peasant Food, Other Notes.  Get a copy of the textbook from the back counter, and finish reading and taking notes on 2.7 (text page 26-27).  If you are not sure how to set-up your notes, there will be an example of the notes hanging on the front whiteboard for you to see as an example.

Sketch and label a typical manor house in medieval Europe.  Be sure to include not only the house but its surroundings.  Include at least 4 labeled details.  Color your drawing.

                We reviewed the article from the library yesterday entitled “Castles in Medieval Times”  We took notes on castles, how they were built, how they were protected and methods used to attack castles. Please re-read the article, taking quality notes on castles.

Today we went to the library to continue our research skills.  Students are required to read the article about castles.  The webpath site was not functioning properly with the article today.  Therefore, I have attached a copy of the article to your absent work in paper form.  Please read the article carefully, and answer the 4 questions on the wkst. (You are not required to answer the “if you finish early” section.)  You must re-phrase the question in your answer and write in full, detailed sentences.  Please be sure to include ALL appropriate details to answer the questions.  For example, parts of the answer might be in multiple paragraphs of the article.  Don’t just write one answer – there may be other correct answers as you continue to read.  Periods 2, 3 & 4 will have the worksheet due tomorrow.  Period 1’s due date is delayed due to the webpath issues first period.

We finished our vocabulary entry task on the vocabulary for chapter 2 today.  We wrote definitions for the word loyalty in the scroll on the back side of the wkst.  As homework, you must write a detailed paragraph about a time that a person showed loyalty.  You can use an example from your own life, an example you saw on the news, or an example from a book or movie.  Please do not write about a dog’s (or other animal’s) loyalty – focus on human loyalty.  Your paragraph must be 5 or more sentences long.  The paragraph and the entire completed vocabulary wkst. is due tomorrow.

Please complete the review wkst. on Charlemagne and feudalism.  You should have already attached this page (Chapter 2 Notes 2.2 – 2.3) to nbk. p. 37.  Complete the work.  We went over the answers in class, so you should check your answers with Mrs. Claassen.  This page will be checked in a later notebook check or notebook test.  Make sure you complete the work!

Create an obituary for Charlemagne.  Remember that an obituary is an announcement of a person’s death.  It often includes a short biography and a summary of the person’s accomplishments. 

In the obituary, include:

  • at least two things that described Charlemagne in life
  • at least two accomplishments of Charlemagne
  • a simple drawing (colored!) of Charlemagne or one of his accomplishments.

                                                                Why was there a need for order and protection in Europe?

                                                                How was a person’s social place in feudalism decided?

 

Return to your 2.2 notes on nbk. p. 35 for a repetition.  You have already chunked and titled these notes.  Today, you should write a QUESTION for EACH CHUNK.  The question should be about something that could be answered by reading the notes chunk next to it.  Since you should have 3 or more chunks in the 2.2 notes, you should have 3 or more questions to write.

Draw a social pyramid, showing the four basic levels of the social structure under feudalism in the Middle Ages.  (See text p. 17 if you need help, but do not copy the drawings exactly!  Be creative!)

Make sure that you:               

1) Label each level with words to help the reader understand your drawing.

                        2) Put details in your pictures to clearly show the jobs of each level.

                        3) Each level should demonstrate the amount of people within the level compared to other levels.

                        4) Color your drawings neatly.
