We started chapter 8 today.  First, we did a pre-test.  Ask Mr. Ulyanchuk to make-up this assessment.  It will take you less than 5 minutes to make-up.

            We then read section 8.1 and filled out a t-chart on page 58. Read section 8.2 and create a t-chart. Label one side fact and the other side opinion. Then on the right side write all the similarities between Christianity and Islam that are facts. On the other side write all similarities that Muslims believe they share with Christianity.

Period 2: We went over the previous lesson on 8.2. Then we worked with white-boards and went over which details in 8.2 were facts or opinions. We then read half of 8.3 and took notes about the Qur’an in our graphic organizer.

Period 4: Read section 8.2 and create a t-chart. Label one side fact and the other side opinion. Then on the right side write all the similarities between Christianity and Islam that are facts. On the other side write all similarities that Muslims believe they share with Christianity. We then worked with white-boards and went over which details were facts or opinions.

We finished discussing the history of September 11th today to connect it to current events.  Sorry you missed this conversation.  The discussion evolved in a very informative discussion about how to deal with any sort of conflict in our world.  Whew – important discussion!

We started the next section about the “Four Caliphs” and the Sunni/Shi’ah split. We created to charts on page 54. Come and ask for the teacher’s notebook to fill out the charts. You will need to read section 7.7 and 7.8 to fill out the charts.

We started an assessment over chapter 7. We are doing a summary and students are given a choice between two prompts. The prompts and assignment are attached to your absent note.  This IVF summary is due for first period on Thursday, April 24th.

 On page 51, on the right side we recorded three things about Muhammad’s early life. You can read section 7.3 on page 79 in your textbooks and insert three things about Muhammad’s early life into your notebook on page 51.

Today we performed a short skit about Muhammad’s marriage to Khadijah.

Afterwards we did the blue vocabulary words on page 80 and wrote them into our notebook on page 49. The vocabulary words are:

                                                                        Muslim

After wards we did a PowerPoint on the “Rise and Spread of Islam.” During the PowerPoint we filled out a handout. The handout is included in absent note. In order to complete the handout you will need a copy of the PowerPoint. Ask Mr. Ulyanchuk for a copy of the PowerPoint to fill out the handout.

We finished up our lesson on the geography of the Arabian Peninsula and talked about nomads. On page 49 of their notebooks students wrote:

            Nomads: People with no permanent home and travel place to place to find water and pasture to feed their animals.

We did a worksheet on the Arabian Peninsula. Attached you will find the worksheet.

On page 78 write the blue vocabulary words and definitions  (Islam, Mohammad, polytheism) into your notebook on page 49.

We started the next lesson about Makkah and Muhammad’s early life. One page 51, we drew a line down the middle; we labeled the left side “2 things about Makkah” and we labeled the left side “3 things about Muhammad.”  Get a copy of chapter 7 off of the side counter and read page 78 and write down on page 51 two things about Makkah.

First we changed seats.

Today we watched a video “A Pep Talk from Kid President to You.”

We discussed why it’s important to study Islam. We titled page 48 in the notebook “What do I know about Islam?” Students wrote all the background knowledge they had about Islam.

We turned to textbook page p.448 and found the Arabian Peninsula on the map. We discussed physical maps and physical geography. Then students turned to page 74 in their textbooks and looked at the bodies of water that surrounded the Arabian Peninsula.

We then discussed physical landscapes and the physical landscape of the Arabian Peninsula. The physical landscapes of the Arabian Peninsula is mainly desert and have mountains on the western side. Then we discussed oases in the desert.

On page 49 in their notebooks students wrote the title “Vocab Ch. 7” and defined the following terms:

     Peninsula: A piece of land surrounded by water on three sides.

     Oasis: An area in a desert with water and plants.

Today we read an article entitled “The Story of Last Names.”  Please read the article and return the article when you are finished.  You must also fill-out the wkst.  Please keep in mind that there is not necessarily one right answer for each question on the wkst.  Many possible answers might be correct.  Use your knowledge from the article to come up with logical answers, even if the example is not given in the article itself.  Make sure you capitalize the names when you write them.  You will be required to turn-in this wkst., so please take care of this assignment.

Use the attached powerpoint notes to take notes on nbk. p. 45.  The title of the page should be “Eastern Orthodox Church.” All of the powerpoint information comes from 6.4 in your textbook.  If you prefer to read your textbook for notes, that is fine too.  Remember, the Eastern Orthodox Church information is on your test tomorrow, and you can use your notes on the test.  Please prepare your notes.

Finish reading 6.5 on text pages 68-69.  Fill-out the chart wkst. as you go.  The chart does not need to be filled-out in full sentences.  Give yourself good enough notes to help you understand the three events that led to the split of the Roman Catholic Church.  Remember, you will be able to use these notes on your test on Thursday.  Today we completed The Final Break section.  Attach the chart wkst. to nbk. p. 44.

Use the attached powerpoint notes to take notes on nbk. p. 43.  The title of the page should be “What is an Icon?”  Your target is to write down at least 4 characteristics of an icon… you should actually be able to easily get more than 4 in your notes.

Continue to read 6.5 on text page 68-69.  Fill-out the chart wkst. as you go.  In the chart does not need to be filled-out in full sentences.  Give yourself good enough notes to help you understand the three events that led to the split of the Roman Catholic Church.  Remember, you will be able to use these notes on your test on Thursday.  Today we completed the learning about Iconoclasm and The Crowning of the Holy Roman Emperor.  Tomorrow we will cover The Final Break as well as a basic understanding of the Eastern Orthodox Church.
