* Class Work - History:

Busy day today!  Read this note carefully to cover everything we did today.

We took the map TEST over Eastern Europe #1 today.  If you were absent today, schedule a time to make-up this test within one week or you will earn a zero.

Progress reports were sent home yesterday.  Please get your progress report signed, and return it to Mrs. Claassen by Thursday, March 13th.

On the last page of your notebook, you should have a goal written for your new notebook.  (We did this over a month ago.)  Below your goal, write today’s date (3/12).  Then write 1-2 sentences responding to your progress on your goal.  Make sure you explain with evidence about how you are doing.

On nbk. p. 24, you wrote your compare and contrast paragraph(s) about crime and punishment on a previous day.  Today, students self-assessed their writing.  Use three colors of highlighters.  With one color, highlight all of your sentences about similarities.  With a 2nd color, highlight all of the sentences about differences.  With the 3rd color, highlight your opinion statement about which civilization is more effective for avoiding crime.  Now almost all (or all) of your writing should be colorful!  If you discovered you were missing something, you should go back and fix it before Mrs. Claassen reads your notebook later!

We began to write our introduction for our chapter 4 essay today.  We completed the page of our essay packet about the introduction.  If you were absent, you will need to make-up the introduction page.  Your packet will be turned-in later, so you MUST complete this.

We continued our research for our chapter 4 essay today.  Today we went to the LIBRARY one last time to take notes on our two topics.  If your research is not done by now, you will need to find another way to complete the research.  You could come use Mrs. Claassen’s encyclopedias during lunch.  You could access Webpath from home on your computer.  You could visit the public library.  Whatever you choose, you will need to do it soon!  We are beginning to write our essays and you do not want to fall behind.  Remember, don’t take notes about everything.  Only write down notes about medieval information from that topic that is DIFFERENT from a modern U.S. town.  In addition, your library research should be about extra information that the textbook did not cover about your topic.  Learn new details!

* Class Work - History:

Remember, you will have your map test over Eastern Europe next week on Wednesday, March 12th.  You should be studying your map on nbk. p. 23.  If you have lost the map, you can ask me for another copy.  A map with the countries labeled is hanging on the front whiteboard if you need to check your answers.

Today we were introduced to chapter 6 – The Byzantine Empire.   Please create your title page on nbk. p. 31 by writing:

            Chapter 6

            The Byzantine Empire

We continued our research for our chapter 4 essay today.  Today we filled-out a worksheet taking notes from the textbook.  Use the SAME two topics you researched in the library on Tuesday.  Use your textbook ONLY to take notes on the same two topics.  Don’t take notes about everything.  Only write down notes about medieval information from that topic that is DIFFERENT from a modern U.S. town.

            For example, if you are researching Leisure and Entertainment:

                DON’T write down they played chess – we do that too!  It is not a difference

                DO write down that they were entertained by animal baiting with a bull or bear + details.

Tonight’s Assignment (due Friday 3/7):

            Complete the compare and contrast paragraph on nbk. p. 24.  Be careful to describe both points of view.  Do not just say, “Medieval punishments could include the use of the stocks.  The US doesn’t do that.”  -- You should describe what the US DOES to show the contrast.  See the directions below, and attach the directions to nbk. p. 24.  This assignment is due on Friday, March 7th.

4.7 Crime Compare and Contrast Paragraph

Write one or more paragraphs to compare and contrast modern crime punishments in the United States with medieval crime punishments.  Make sure that you clearly describe at least TWO specific ways that punishments in the two time periods are similar (compare) AND at least TWO specific ways that punishments in the two time periods are different (contrast).  Conclude your paragraph with an opinion statement as to whether the punishments for crimes in medieval times or the modern United States are more effective in stopping crime and explain your opinion. Be careful to indent your paragraph and watch your spelling, capitalization and neatness!

* Class Work - Exploratory:

We did not complete CNN current events today.

Your notebook is due tomorrow.  We updated our notebooks today.  Pages 21-40 of your notebook will be checked.  Please make sure your notebook is complete.  Notebook grades are worth a large portion of your exploratory class grade.

Exploratory class will be rotating soon.  There will be a geography test before we change classes.  You will be allowed to use your notebook for the geography test, so please make sure all of your geography lessons are complete and correct.

Last week we finished our 4.7 notes on Crime and Punishment.  Today you should chunk and title your 4.7 notes on nbk. p. 24.

We went to the library to begin our research for our chapter 4 essay on the differences between medieval towns and modern towns in the United States.  We worked on filling-out the attached note page.  Please decide on your two topics.  Since you missed today’s research time, you should either schedule a time to come to Mrs. Claassen’s room during lunch to research, or begin researching at home (you can get to Webpath through the Moses Lake website).   We will be researching in the library again on Monday (3/10), but that will not be enough time for you to finish your research.  You will need to make-up some of your research time outside of class time to be prepared for your essay.  Remember, your chapter 4 essay will count as your test grade for chapter 4.
